Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, North London branch of Mind reports increase in mental health issues among poorest, following Council Tax benefit cuts

The Haringey branch of mental health charity Mind has said that the poorest people in the community are suffering most from mental health issues – and as a direct result of government cuts to Council Tax benefit.

Online publishers ThisisLocalLondon reports that following cuts to Council Tax benefit in 2012, the number of people using Mind’s services in Haringey, north London “tripled”.

Operations services manager Lynette Charles said that increasing numbers of people are struggling with their mental health as a direct result of changes to Council Tax benefit.

Ms Charles has written to the Rev Paul Nicolson in support of his campaign to increase Council Tax benefit for low-income households and the unemployed.

In October, Haringey Mind lost its local council funding. Haringey Mind has received local authority funding for 23 years – but as a result of losing funding this year, the charity will have to end its advocacy services for adults in Haringey from the end of 2014.

A council spokesman said that as a result of changes introduced under the Care Act 2014, Haringey Mind’s funding contract would have to be re-tendered at the end of this year.

A spokesman for Haringey Council said:

“We offer a range of advice services for people experiencing financial difficulty –
and would encourage them to contact us as early as possible, so that we can provide appropriate support.”
