A Norfolk man found to be growing cannabis plants in his garden shed and home has told Norwich Crown Court that he only supplied friends with the drug and grew it for his own personal use.
Damieon Norton of Gaultree Square, Emneth in Norfolk was found to have one mature cannabis plant growing inside a tent in his bedroom – and nine seedlings being cultivated in a shed at his home address.
Police searched the address on 22 June and also discovered 14 bags of cannabis in shoe boxes in his kitchen, as well as £1,560 in cash at the address.
In court, his legal representative said that Norton’s dealing was “at its very lowest level” – and he deserved credit for pleading guilty to producing cannabis and possession of cannabis with intent to supply.
Norton was given a four-month jail sentence, suspended for 12 months – and was also ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work.
Under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, cannabis is classified as a Class B drug.
New Labour reclassified cannabis to a Class C drug – however, it was again reclassified as a Class B drug in 2008 by the then Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, as a result of concerns over the possible long-term impact of the drug on the health of young adults using it.
