Birmingham Crown Court has sentenced a 28-year-old man to nine years in jail, after he stabbed a commuter as they disembarked the Midland Metro in Bilston.
On 5 August 2016, the victim boarded the Wolverhampton-bound tram service at Winson Green – and quickly became aware of Osama Hussain, who was being disruptive.
During the journey, the defendant was asked by the conductor to stop drinking alcohol from a can and to turn his music down.
As the service arrived at Bilston station, Hussain and the victim exited the tram via different doors – but as they headed up the steps to exit the platform, the victim accidently brushed passed the defendant, which resulted in Hussain stabbing the victim a number of times.
The victim was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where he was treated for multiple stab wounds.
The following day, the defendant was arrested at his home address in Birmingham – and he later pleaded guilty to wounding with intent and having an offensive weapon.
Senior Crown Prosecutor from West Midlands Crown Prosecution Service, Alistair Redford, said:
“Osama Hussain took exception to the fact that the victim had accidentally brushed past him as they exited the platform.
“He was carrying a knife, which he then produced and stabbed the victim a number of times – and then later fled the scene of the attack.
“This was an unprovoked and serious knife attack – and the defendant must now face the consequences for his actions.”
