A new report by the National House Building Council (NHBC) has revealed that in the first three months of 2015, more than 40,000 new homes were registered – an increase of 18% on figures for the same period last year.
Social housing publisher 24Dash.com reports that there were 30,691 private sector and 9,590 public sector homes registered to March this year.
The figures show that 17,210 new houses were registered during March (12,699 private; 4,511 public) – an increase of 32% for the same month last year.
It is estimated that the UK will have to build around 250,000 a year to keep pace with the current demand for affordable housing across the country.
Last week, NHBC figures revealed that more detached homes were being built, comprising 26% of new homes – in 2003, a total of 29% of new homes were detached houses.
In the first three months of this year, there was a 70% increase in the number of house building applications from developers, the figures show.
NHBC Chief Executive Mike Quinton said:
“Our figures show an encouraging start to 2015 with new housing registrations up 18% on the first quarter of last year.
“Housing growth levels remain strong across virtually every part of the UK,” he added.
“However, we have made clear that the UK is still building way below the volumes of homes that we need.
“NHBC looks forward to working with government to ensure that high quality new housing is a top priority,” said Mr Quinton.
