A motorist has become the first person to be convicted of “hogging “ the middle lane of a motorway when the slow lane was available.
Leeds Magistrates’ Court heard that the driver of a Citroen Berlingo van was driving at 60mph and refused to move out of the central lane of the M62 near Huddersfield on 25 August last year.
Police said that six motorists had to brake and swerve to overtake the van, as it travelled on the eastbound carriage of the motorway near Junction 23.
PC Nigel Fawcett-Jones from the Road Policing Unit said dangerous lane hogging causes congestion and inconvenience to other road users.
The practice of hogging the middle lane was made illegal in the UK in 2013.
The driver was fined £940 – comprising a £500 fine, £400 in costs and a £40 victim surcharge in his absence – and had five penalty points added to his driving licence.
