A mother whose son died from meningitis after a mix up between the NHS 111 non-emergency phone line service and the London Ambulance Service has said that she has been let down by the NHS.
The Evening Standard reports that Sofia Mohammed told phone operators at 111 that her five-year-old son Yusuf had stopped breathing.
“I knew he was dying,” Mrs Mohammed said.
“I didn’t know what to do. I was just holding him and crying. I didn’t know what else to do to him. Yusuf passed away at about 10.45am. The ambulance did not come until 11.05am.”
Mrs Mohammed’s son died on 2 January after she dialled the emergency number 999 – but was advised to call the non-emergency helpline 111.
The 111 operator failed to respond the information that Yusuf was not breathing and did not despatch a paramedic immediately.
Mrs Mohammed told Good Morning Britain that the operator kept asking if the family had recently been to Africa – or if Yusuf was allergic to anything. She alleges that she repeatedly told them he was not breathing.
“My son could still be here today – but they let me down” she added.
