Mother Falls into Coma Following Use of Hair Dye (24 November 2011)

Date: 24/11/2011
Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Mother Falls into Coma Following Use of Hair Dye

A mother has fallen into a coma following the use of a home hair dye product. The family of 38-year-old Julie McCabe, who is alleged to have experienced a severe reaction to the hair dye, has been warned that she has an eight per cent chance of surviving. Mrs McCabe remains on life support following using the dye three weeks ago. Doctors have warned that in the event that Mrs McCabe survives, she may be permanently brain-damaged.

A definitive link between the L’Oreal hair dye product and Mrs McCabe’s use of the product has not yet been determined. It is feared that the chemical para-phenylenediamine (PPD), found in 99 per cent of hair dyes, may be associated with the condition. Her family, who claim she used hair dye regularly, had never experienced a reaction to the product previously. They have made contact with a solicitor who has experience of representing other individuals who have suffered from allergic reactions to PPD. The family believes that Mrs McCabe had performed the recommended skin test prior to using the product. A spokesperson for L’Oreal claimed that the company was “extremely concerned” to be informed of Mrs. McCabe’s “serious” situation and has offered to provide any information that may be required.
