More than 1,000 disclosures about violent partners under Clare’s Law (27 January 2015)

Police figures obtained by the Press Association under Freedom of Information requests have revealed that so far at least 1,335 disclosures under the domestic violence law Clare’s Law have been made to help protect women from violent partners.
Clare’s Law was set up in memory of Clare Wood, 36, who was killed by her violent ex-partner.
The law came into force in England and Wales in March 2014. The law gives women and men the right to ask police if their partner has a history of violence or domestic violence.
To date, at least 3,760 applications have been made to police forces requesting information about a partner, resulting in 1,335 disclosures, BBC News reports.
However, three police forces have not disclosed their statistics, so the figures may be higher.
The figures include cases involving “right to ask” – where partners have asked the police for information; as well as “right to know” cases in which police have warned someone that their partner has a violent history.
Clare Wood’s boyfriend George Appleton strangled her and set her on fire at her home in Salford, Greater Manchester.
