Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Mid Devon launches first stage of new affordable housing scheme for local people

Mid Devon District Council has launched a new affordable housing scheme, with the first stage of affordable homes for rent officially opened.

The first 24 homes in a high-quality affordable housing scheme were officially opened in Cullompton on 18 May, said the council.

They were the result of a partnership between South Western Housing Society and Mid Devon District Council.

They were also developed in partnership with the District Council – and were built by Halsall Construction.

The affordable housing scheme officially opened consists of ten three-bedroom houses and six two-bedroom houses for rent – as well as four three-bedroom houses and four two-bedroom houses sold as 50% shared ownership.

The official opening was conducted by the chairman of South Western Housing Society, Bob Chapman. At the launch, Mr Chapman said:

“We’re pleased to have worked in partnership with Mid Devon District Council on this development – and we look forward to continuing our work with the council to provide many more homes over the coming years in the area.”

Some of the society’s new tenants joined the development partners and guests at the opening – and moved into their new homes from 22 May. All tenants have a connection to the District of Mid Devon.

Mid Devon District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing, Councillor Ray Stanley, added:

“The council is committed to providing affordable housing for those who need modern homes to rent – and has made significant investments in housing and schemes like this, which are really important for Mid Devon, providing affordable housing to meet local need.

“Working in partnership with housing associations such as South Western Housing Society is key to delivering new affordable homes in the district – and these quality properties will be a boost to the rental market for local people.”

The council said that, to be eligible for the new properties, applicants need to be registered on Devon Homefinder – and are required to have a local connection to the Mid Devon area.
