Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Mental Health Awareness Week runs from 11 to 17 May and this year’s theme is mindfulness.

Mental Health Awareness Week is organised by the Mental Health Foundation – and focuses on a different aspect of mental health awareness each year.

The foundation defines mindfulness as “paying attention to the present moment, without getting stuck in the past or worrying about the future”.

The organisations also runs course to teach mindfulness – the Be Mindful Online Course, which is a 4-week online course is designed to guide individuals through all the elements of Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (CBMT) and Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR).

The foundations also uploads videos about mindfulness on its YouTube website – and says practising mindfulness can help prevent stress and anxiety, which is one of the most widespread but unreported mental health conditions in the UK.

There will be events all over the UK to mark Mental Health Awareness Week and organisers can log details of their event online at the Mental Health Foundation website.

The foundation also organises World Mental Health Day every year on 10 October. This year’s theme is Dignity in Mental Health, which will focus on global mental health education, awareness and advocacy. A programme will be announce don the website at a later date.
