Hart Council in East Hampshire has launched a campaign to encourage men who experience domestic abuse to seek help available.

The campaign was launched to coincide with International Men’s Day on Saturday (19/11/16) – research shows that one in six men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetime, according to statistics from the ManKind Initiative published in September 2016.

Domestic abuse was one of the issues highlighted on International Men’s Day in the UK.

Chairman of the charity ManKind Initiative, Mark Brooks, said:

“On this international day of celebrating men and boys in all their diversity, we want to highlight the important message that one in six men report that they have been a victim of domestic abuse.

“For every three victims of domestic abuse, two will be women and one will be male – this is the equivalent of 2.2 million male victims in the UK and 4.5 million women.

“Abuse can range from actual violence or object throwing, to mental abuse such as constant bullying or constant insults.

“We provide both emotional support and practical information – and we receive calls from male victims across all age ranges and professions. Don’t suffer in silence – seek help.”

The ManKind Initiative was the first charity in the UK to support male victims of domestic abuse and provides a range of services directly to men, such as an anonymous national helpline.

Calls from mothers, sisters and friends of male victims seeking information are also welcome, said the organisation.

Chair of the Safer North Hampshire Partnership, Councillor John Kennett, added:

“We want to stress to men that they are not alone in experiencing domestic abuse – and this International Men’s Day and White Ribbon Day on 25 November provide an opportunity for people to seek help and end the abusive behaviour.”

White ribbons will be worn worldwide on 25 November, as people pledge never to commit, condone or remain silent about violence against women.
