Medway Council is supporting a countywide campaign Safeguarding Adults Awareness Week, to help raise awareness of adult abuse and encourage people to report it.

Medway Council is part of the Kent and Medway Safeguarding Adults Board –
the multi-agency board works together to raise awareness of abuse and minimise the risk of someone becoming a victim.

Each victim has the opportunity to speak to someone who will listen to their concerns – and provide support to help keep them safe and away from harm, while maintaining their independence and quality of life.

Director of Children and Adult Services at Medway Council, Ian Sutherland, said:

“More people feel confident in reporting abuse and we are providing support to help them through the difficult time.

“Although anyone can become a victim, those most at risk are often people with learning difficulties, disabilities, mental health problems or older people.

“Abuse comes in many forms, such as physical, psychological, financial, sexual, neglect, modern slavery, hate crimes and discrimination – and often, people are not aware that they are a victim of abuse, or they fear the repercussions if they tell someone.

“Our staff have been trained to provide discreet and specialist advice to victims, as well as support to those who report it.

“I would also encourage anyone with concerns about a loved one, colleague, friend or neighbour to report it on their behalf. Please don’t sit in silence, report it – we’re here to help.”

The council’s Adult Social Care team organised a series of events to support Safeguarding Adults Awareness Week, which ran up to 7 October.

Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Adult Services, Councillor David Brake, added:

“Our social care team provides advice all year round and this campaign helps them raise awareness of the support available to victims of abuse.

“Our adult social care team works alongside colleagues at partner agencies, as well as those in the housing and voluntary sectors, to ensure support is provided to people who have been exposed to abuse.

“Everyone has a part to play, so please, if you think someone is being affected by abuse, report it – we will continue to work together to help protect vulnerable people.”
