Stores in Mayfair have hired a former Gurkha soldier in a bid to deter shoplifters in high end retail stores.
There has been a reported “surge” in shoplifting in Mayfair shops, the Evening Standard reports.
Many of the stores are popular with celebrities and are being targeted by thieves who travel specifically to the area of Mayfair to shoplift.
Scotland Yard said that police officers have liased with shop owners to establish a network of businesses in Mayfair who “look out for each other”.
“Officers attend various such meetings and provide crime prevention talks to any shop that has concerns or questions.
“Safer Neighbourhood officers are working hard to address concerns,” the spokesman added.
Mayfair Ward Councillor Ian Rowley added that some of the thieves commuted from north London to carry out “specific” shoplifting activities in Mayfair.
“Police know who they are,” he added.
It is reported that the presence of the former Gurkha soldier on patrol has led to a fall in shop lifting incidents in Mayfair shops – but the crime is still “rife”.
