Tower Hamlets Council in east London has prosecuted a market trader operating in the borough for selling fake designer clothes.

Mohamed Mansaray, 50, of Argali House, Kale Road in Kent appeared at Thames Magistrates’ Court, after being warned about selling counterfeit Gucci, D&G, Chanel and Louis Vuitton garments from a private Sunday market operating in Sclater Street car park.

Council officials had warned him on two occasions before action was taken –
Mansaray ignored the warning from Trading Standards officers from his first breach (23 June 2013) and returned again to the market to sell his counterfeit goods on 26 January 2014.

Subsequently, he left the UK for his native home of Sierra Leone.

In May 2016, an arrest warrant was issued for Mr Mansaray – upon his return to the UK, Mr Mansaray handed himself in to the police.

He pleaded guilty to two charges contrary to the Trade Marks Act 1994 and was fined £200, with costs of £280 and a victim surcharge of £20.

The courts also ordered the confiscated clothes to be handed over to the council and to be donated to a registered charity with the labels removed.

After sentencing, Tower Hamlets Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for Community Safety, Councillor Shiria Khatun, said:

“Anyone tempted or already involved in dealing in counterfeit goods should think very carefully – counterfeiting is not a victimless crime, it is part of the informal economy that costs local jobs and, in many cases, can present significant safety risks to consumers.

“Trading Standards will continue to investigate and vigorously pursue those involved to protect both consumers and legitimate businesses.”
