Manx Foundation Campaign to Protect the Rights of the Disabled (20 September 2011)

An Isle of Man group is campaigning for greater protection for the welfare of disabled individuals. The Manx foundation for the physically disabled is pushing the government to implement the Disability Discrimination Act 2006. Michelle Brady, the group’s disability access officer, claimed that disabled people needed protection. Miss Brady added that disabled people on the island continued to have both employment issues and issues relating to the accessibility of goods and services. Miss Brady stated that the implementation of the act would provide employers and service providers with a framework that they could look to and which would lead to improvements for individuals with disabilities.
The Disability Discrimination Act 2006 would make illegal discrimination against disabled individuals in relation to the provision of services, facilities, and goods. The act, which has been approved by Tynwald, has been raised in parliament and the new island government must complete the process in order to ensure its implementation. The Manx foundation has scheduled a week of activities in October, to include sports sessions, sailing trips, and open days, to highlight the need for the implementation of the act.
