A Manchester street trader operating illegally in Manchester city centre has been ordered to pay £644.59 and forfeit his goods, which were seized by council officers.
On 15 August 2015, city council officers spotted Adamah Bah, 40, trading illegally in Piccadilly Gardens in the city centre.
The officers cautioned Bah for the offence of illegal street trading and seized his goods as evidence, including umbrellas, packaged toys, bubble guns and inflatable toys.
Bah failed to attend the magistrates’ hearing, and the case was proven in his absence.
Adamah Bah of Wilbraham Road in Fallowfield, Greater Manchester was fined £220 with £252.59 costs, £150 criminal court charge and a victim of crime surcharge. A forfeiture order for his seized goods was granted – and he was also deprived of his pedlar's licence.
Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for Neighbourhoods, Councillor Nigel Murphy, said:
“This prosecution is the latest in a series of actions we have taken eradicate the nuisance of these illegal traders.
“Let the size of the punishment handed down by the court act as a deterrent to individuals like this, who needlessly clutter up some of Manchester’s busiest shopping streets.”
Manchester City Council's city centre spokesman, Cllr Pat Karney, added:
“We are determined to continue with the clampdown on any illegal traders operating in our city centre.
“These prosecutions send a message that our officers will prosecute anyone found breaking the rules – and will continue to do so until we stamp out this practice.”
