Police say that a 23-year-old man has suffered life changing injuries after being shot on a busy street in Islington, north London at around 1pm on Monday (31/03/14) afternoon.

The incident happened at the junction of Cross Street and the Essex Road in Islington – and is the second violent attack in central Islington within a week.

Last week a teenager lost a finger when two men armed with a machete and hatchet attacked each other opposite the Town Hall on Upper Street in Islington.

On Monday, the Essex Road was crowded with shoppers and workers on their lunch breaks at the time of the shooting – witnesses say the victim was shot in the back and a man was seen driving away from the crime scene on a moped.

A spokesman from Scotland Yard said:

“Police were called at 12.54pm to reports of a shooting in Essex Road, Islington.

“Local officers from Islington, officers from the firearms command and paramedics attended and found a 23-year-old man suffering from a suspected gunshot wound.

“The man is conscious and breathing and has been taken to an East London hospital with life changing injuries.

“Officers from Islington are investigating and enquiries continue to establish the full circumstances of this incident.”
The London Ambulance Service confirmed that it received at call at 12.55pm and attended the scene in Islington.

“We sent a single responder in a car, an ambulance crew, a duty officer and London’s Air Ambulance to the scene,” said a spokesman.

“Our staff treated one patient – a man – who was taken to hospital in an ambulance escorted by the doctor from the air ambulance.”

The victim’s condition is described as “serious”.

The area of Islington where the shooting took place consists of small independent shops and bars – the shooting took place outside a dry cleaning shop.

The Essex Road is also bordered by some of Islington’s largest social housing estates as well as gentrified areas of the borough.

A large area of the Essex Road and neighbouring streets was cordoned off by police after the shooting. Armed police, police sniffer dogs and a Metropolitan Police helicopter attended the scene, but police confirmed that no weapon has yet been recovered.

After last Thursday’s knife attack on Upper Street, police speculated that the incident might be an escalation in gang violence in the borough.

The two men involved in last week’s knife attack on Upper Street in Islington were arrested for causing grievous bodily harm after being treated for their injuries at the Whittington Hospital in Highgate, north London.

Police officers say that last week’s attack may be the result of a postcode war between rival gangs.
