MPs face war crimes allegations over “systemic abuse” of Iraqi POWs (13 January 2014)

British MPs who served in the Cabinet between 2003 and 2008 have been implicated in war crimes allegations which claim that British troops in Iraq tortured Iraqi prisoners during the Iraq war.
The German-based European Centre for Constitutional Human Rights has asked the International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate allegations of the torture of Iraqi prisoners between 2003 and 2008.
British politicians Geoffrey Hoon – who was then New Labour Minister for Defence – and former New Labour Secretary of State Adam Ingram have been named in the allegations, which involve the “systemic torture and abuse of prisoners in Iraq between 2003 and 2008”.
More than 400 former Iraqi prisoners have complained about abuse by UK troops in recent years according to one law firm.
A similar complaint was filed to the ICC in 2006 but failed.
A 250-page document has now been handed to the ICC detailing 85 representative cases and more than 2,000 allegations against British soldiers serving in Iraq.
Munich publication Sueddeutsche Zeitung says the Ministry of Defence has accepted there were isolated cases of abuse by British soldiers serving in Iraq – but has denied there was systemic abuse of Iraqi prisoners of war (POWs).
