A court has banned a motorist who was allowed to continue driving, despite acquiring 54 points on his licence for previous motoring offences.

Canterbury Crown Court handed 34-year-old Keith Baldock from Westgate-on-Sea in Kent a three-year driving ban. The legal limit for points on a driving licence is 12 and a judge told Baldock that he had been “lucky” to escape a driving ban on previous occasions.

The Daily Mail reports that a series of court errors enabled the jobless former tyre fitter to continue driving.

His previous offences include driving over the limit (DUI) – and stealing £500-worth of petrol from several garages last year, for which he was given a 12-month supervision order.

Baldock was handed 30 points for five different offences last November, but at the time he was sentenced, Judge Nigel Van Der Bijl was unaware that he already had 24 points on his licence.

Prosecutors had attempted to get Baldock banned in February, after it was discovered he already had 24 points on his licence when he appeared in court last November. However, the limitation period of 56 days for changing a sentence had already elapsed.

Baldock appeared before Judge Van Der Bijl again on Tuesday (29/04/14) and this time received a driving ban.
