London must build on Green Belt land, says property consultant (10 December 2014)

A new report from the London Society has called for more homes to be built on the Green Belt around London, saying that it cannot be treated as “sacrosanct” given the current shortage of affordable housing.

The Evening Standard newspaper reports that the society is calling for land within a radius of 35 miles of the capital to be used for new homes. The report points out that London is currently growing at the rate of a city the size of Birmingham every ten years.

The author of the report – presented in London on Monday (08/12/14) – is Jonathan Manns, an associate director at property consultants Colliers International.

The Colliers International website describes the company’s services as a “leading global commercial real estate company offering comprehensive services to investors, property owners, tenants and developers”.

Overseas investment in the capital is one of the factors which has pushed up property prices in recent years and impacted on the lack of affordable housing in London.

Mr Manns suggests that between 1.9% and 4.8% of London’s Green Belt would have to be sacrificed to build one million new homes in London over the next 15 years to meet the growing population.

The report suggests that “wedges” of Green Belt round London could be preserved, with development allowed in between – or alternatively, narrow green “ripples” of land radiating from the centre of London could be left.

Green Belt land is protected under law from development and planning consent is only usually given under exceptional circumstances.
