London council to ban lorries parking overnight in residential streets (24 November 2015)

Hounslow Council is to introduce an overnight parking ban on lorries weighing more than 5 tonnes, following complaints from residents.

The ban is due to come into effect from April 2016 – and brings Hounslow in line with neighbouring boroughs, which have had bans in place for several years.

Lorries, buses and trucks will no longer be able to park up on residential streets between 6.30pm and 8am.

The decision to introduce a night-time parking ban for goods vehicles is part of a drive to cut air pollution, congestion – and free up the streets for residents’ parking.

Most of the cost of implementing the new ban is expected to be funded by a Transport for London grant, which the council says has been agreed in principle.

Hounslow Council’s Cabinet Member for Community Protection, Councillor Richard Foote, took the Single Member Decision to implement the Overnight Goods Vehicle Parking Ban earlier in November.

Hounslow Council cabinet members first discussed a ban in December 2013 – and a consultation was held in 2014.

Signs warning long-haul drivers about the new legislation will be erected in the New Year.

Cllr Foote said:

“It’s not fair that Hounslow is being used as a car park by heavy goods vehicle drivers. It’s a nuisance for residents.

“This is the right time to bring in the ban, particularly as our neighbours have had bans in place for 40 years.”
