Tooting MP and Mayoral hopeful Sadiq Khan has said that if he is elected to City Hall, he will drive down the use of stop and search by the police in London.
Mr Khan added that he would also strengthen rules that prevent police officers from carrying out stop and search on the basis of skin colour – and would challenge the law to make the practice illegal.
The Evening Standard reports that in the capital, stop and search rates have fallen by 54% since 2010.
However, an intelligence-led, targeted approach to stop and search has actually led to thousands more arrests.
Mr Khan said:
“The last few years have shown what can be achieved when there’s a concerned effort to reduce the overuse of stop and search.
“But there’s still much more to be done – and if I’m Mayor, I’ll do all in my power to further cut its use.
“Overuse of stop and search can have a dramatic effect on communities – it undermines public confidence in our police if Londoners are being stopped and searched for no good reason.”
