The Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames is consulting on two new cycle routes under the £30 million Go Cycle programme funded by the Mayor of London and Transport for London (TfL).

The routes – Kingston High Street and the New Malden to Raynes Park route – are being consulted on to get public feedback on improving cycling facilities, road safety and public spaces in these areas.

The Kingston High Street scheme includes plans to create a two-way cycle lane that connects the Go Cycle scheme at Portsmouth Road directly to the town centre.

Meanwhile, a new 1.2km walking and cycling path from New Malden to Raynes Park will open up an entirely traffic free route between New Malden Railway Station and Raynes Park Recreation Ground, says the council.

The path, which crosses into the borough of Merton, runs along Thames Water land, parallel to the railway line, passing under the A3 Kingston bypass and avoiding busy or lengthy alternative routes.

Journey times between these areas for pedestrians and cyclists should be improved under the scheme.

Deputy Leader and Go Cycle portfolio lead Councillor Terry Paton said:

“These are two very different Go Cycle schemes that we’re consulting on, but they contain the same aim – which is to help change the way people travel by encouraging walking and cycling, wherever possible.

“One route is a natural extension to the new Portsmouth Road cycle route, linking it directly to the town centre and the other is a new, traffic-free quiet way for walking and cycling between New Malden and Raynes Park – which is a real benefit for residents in Kingston and Merton, as well as commuters between the two centres.”
