Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Kent holidaymaker takes legal action over alleged holiday food poisoning

A holidaymaker from Kent who alleges she fell ill with severe symptoms of food poisoning on holiday in Turkey is taking legal action.

Kent online reports that 48-year-old Jane Syers from Dartford booked her £500 holiday with travel company World Sky Travel Limited, trading as Anatolian Sky Holidays. Ms Syers and a friend, Suzanne Chandler, stayed at the 4-star Perdikia Hill Hotel in Ovacik.

However, two days into the holiday, she fell ill with symptoms which included severe vomiting.

Miss Syers says that after falling ill, she hardly ate or drank – and says she still suffers from the effects of her illness.

Ms Chandler was also ill – and Miss Syers says that more than a dozen tourists at the hotel also complained of feeling unwell.

She complained to Anatolian Sky Holidays and was offered a 5% discount off another holiday. It was then Ms Syers decided to take legal action to try and discover what had made her and others fall ill on holiday.

Ms Syers said:

“I have never done anything like this before but I thought I just can’t afford to spend money on holidays that are a waste of time.”

She says during the holiday, food at the hotel was sometimes undercooked or served lukewarm – and the buffet was also at times left uncovered, allowing insects to access food on the buffet.

Insects can carry serious infections like salmonella and E.coli – and insects, birds or small reptiles like geckos should never be allowed to access food because of the health risks.

Insects, birds and reptiles or mammals can also carry infections to and from drinking water and swimming pools water if it is not sufficiently chlorinated.
The most common water-borne infection is the parasitic infection cryptosporidiosis, which is ingested and survives in a spore in the intestinal tract if swimming pool water is contaminated with animal or human faeces.

Undercooked or food that is reheated and served again can also be sources of holiday food poisoning.

Ms Syers said:

“We were really looking forward to a relaxing holiday – but after just a couple of days it turned into a nightmare.
“We were so disappointed and angry that we could not enjoy our holiday together.”

A spokesman for Anatolian Sky Holidays said:

“We would like to state that Anatolian Sky regards any incident of this nature extremely seriously – and every step was taken, including seeking and acting on advice provided by ABTA.
“The health and safety of all of our guests is always of paramount importance to our company.

“We were extremely surprised and distressed to learn of Ms Syers’ illness and we do hope she has now made a full recovery.”
