Islington Council in north London has announced a £22 million programme of capital works designed to combat damp and condensation across two of the biggest council estates in the borough – Andover and Girdlestone.
The council said that the project – being carried out by Breyer Group and Mears – would result in the Girdlestone’s lightweight metal roof being completely stripped and replaced, with state-of-the-art insulation being laid down.
New rainwater drainage systems and better ventilation for bathrooms will also be installed, as well new insulation for all balconies on the estates, to prevent damp and condensation.
Some additional internal insulation work will be carried out to make residents’ homes drier and improve heat retention – potentially cutting down energy bills.
Islington Council’s director of property services, Simon Kwong, said:
“We’re committed to ensuring our residents have decent homes to live in and can be proud of their property.
“Our £22 million campaign to combat damp and condensation shows just how seriously we take these issues.
“I’m very grateful for residents’ patience and understanding as these vital works are carried out.”
