Cardiff City Council is warning motorists that if they break the law, they can expect to be fined.
The results from February’s Moving Traffic Offences Scheme in Cardiff are now available, revealing that there were 640 more fines issued for bus lane violations in February, compared with Januarys’ figures – a total of 6,832 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) issued compared with 6,192 PCNs the month before.
There has also been a significant increase in the number of PCNs issued for drivers blocking traffic by stopping in yellow box junctions – an increase from 167 PCNs in January to 689 PCN’s in February. This is due to the council enforcing two yellow box junctions in Cardiff city centre.
The contraventions recorded from the camera car – which mainly focuses on illegal parking around schools – have decreased, compared with the previous month, however, falling from 444 offences in January to 405 in February.
Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transportation, Councillor Ramesh Patel, said:
“The Moving Traffic Offences scheme will continue to expand, as we continue to look to improve traffic flow in and around the city centre and encourage people to use alternative forms of transport to reduce the number of people using private cars.
“From April 2016, the council is changing the way surpluses from the MTO Scheme are financially recorded – the costs of the scheme are deducted from the money received and this will continue to support highway, transport and environmental improvements in line with the Transport Regulations Act 1984.
“The council has significantly invested in this scheme and the monies raised pay for the capital costs of the scheme.
“We are committed to invest the surplus to strive towards our 50/50 modal shift between those travelling by private car and alternative forms of transport.”
