According to a report conducted by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR), the impact of immigration on unemployment levels has been insignificant. However, the report states that it is unclear whether migration will result in a shortage of low-skilled careers for British workers. The report follows claims from Migrationwatch UK that there was a likelihood of a link between increasing youth unemployment levels and increasing migration from Eastern Europe. Migrationwatch UK said that 600,000 migrants had entered the UK while 45,000 young people were unemployed. The NIESR report stated that migration had no impact on the levels of claimant count unemployment in the UK. Their study investigated the number of migrants provided with National Insurance numbers during the years 2002/3 to 2010/11. They compared their findings with the number of individuals claiming unemployment benefits.
A spokesperson for the Home Office claimed that they had already begun to tackle the uncontrolled immigration characteristic of the past and had limited the number of non-EU workers arriving in the UK. She added that their latest statistics showed consecutive falls in the number of work visas issued and that the Government would shortly announce changes to the UK’s family migration and settlement routes.
