Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Hounslow Council wins funding to help tackle rogue landlords

Hounslow Council in Greater London has received grant funding of £67,500 to help tackle rogue landlords.

The funding follows a successful bid to the Department for Communities and Local Government – and will be extra funding to assist the council’s specialist Rogue Landlords team within the Housing Enforcement team.

Together with the council’s own investment of £197,000 over three years, the team will continue its work on the issues caused by landlords not abiding by the law and providing substandard properties to tenants.

The team targets unlicensed landlords of Houses of Multiple Occupation (HMO’s) and landlords who do not maintain their properties, resulting in poor living conditions for tenants in sub-standard housing – as well as illegally occupied outbuildings and landlords who fail to enter into proper and lawful tenancy agreements.

The council regulates conditions within the private rented sector – which makes up nearly 20% of all private homes in the borough – to ensure that rented properties meet the minimum standards under housing law.

Leader of Hounslow Council, Councillor Steve Curran, said:

“These funds will help us to go further in tackling the blight of rogue landlords who rent out unsafe, illegal and overcrowded properties – we want to let them know it is not acceptable.

“This money – on top of the council's own investment for the specialist Rogue Landlords team – will be used to tackle the issues to make sure we can carry on the work we're doing.

“Our aim as always is to look to improve the quality of life of all our residents, by providing through our services safe, warm and affordable housing in the private housing sector, as well as council-owned properties.”
