Work has started on the first council homes to be built in Harrow, north London for 25 years.
The new, family-sized homes at Stanmore are the first of 80 to be built by the end of 2018. Harrow Council says that the new homes are being built with modern family life at their centre, with spacious kitchen diners, separate living space and “eco credentials”, rather the old, red brick homes of the past, which had poor insulation.
It is anticipated that, within a year, six Harrow families will move into the modern, energy-efficient houses.
Harrow Council leader David Perry said:
“These affordable rent homes are being built to the highest quality – they’re stylish and set among trees and greenery.
“I’m proud that our council is setting right decades of neglect – we promised the people of Harrow that we would support our families with places to live and this is just the start of Building a Better Harrow.”
The council said that when the last council homes were built in Harrow, the world’s first ever website was just about to go live.
