HSE launches campaign to highlight construction workers’ accident and disease risks (1 July 2014)

Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, HSE launches campaign to highlight construction workers’ accident and disease risks

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has launched a campaign to target unsafe working practices on construction sites. From 23 June, HSE inspectors have been making spot checks on construction sites to uncover risks to construction workers.

Industrial accidents and construction accidents are some of the most common types of work accident in the UK – construction is considered one of the most risky professions for work accidents, along with agriculture and the recycling industry.

The HSE is focusing on construction risks such as vibration injuries from equipment, exposure to noise on construction sites, as well as the risks from exposure to hazardous materials on construction sites, including asbestos, silica dust, cement and lead in paint.

Employers have a duty of care to employees and contractors under the Health and Safety at Work Etc Act 1974.

The HSE prosecutes cases where it is found employers have failed in their duty and this has caused or contributed to a construction accident or injury to a construction worker.

Accidents on construction sites have to be reported via RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Disease and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995, as amended).

The HSE campaign will also highlight the fact that working on a construction site means that workers are 100 times more likely to die from a work-related disease such as asbestosis or mesothelioma, than in a work accident.

HSE figures show that 39 construction workers were killed in construction site accidents in 2012-2013.

The death toll among construction site workers exposed to silica dust alone is more than 500 workers annually, however.
