Government officials in the UK and Australia are reportedly working on a deal which could allow more Australians to work in the UK.

Restrictions on the number of Australians allowed to work in the UK have led to a 50% fall in Australians coming to Britain.

Many Australians have family ties to the UK, but EU laws have restricted the number of people from outside EU member states who can come to Britain to live and work.

News Corp reports that both UK government and Australian government officials are working to reverse EU changes to immigration law introduced in the last two years, which effectively capped the number of Australians who could work in the UK.

The draft proposals are due to be completed by the end of 2014 and it is reported they will allow Australians to come to the UK as an exception under current immigration law.

In a visit to London this week, Australia’s Prime Minister Tony Abbot discussed the current regulations and proposals for a compromise work visa for Australians with London Mayor Boris Johnson.

It is thought Mr Johnson will propose that Australians should be placed in a different migration category from other non-EU nationals, given the historic ties between the two countries, and will raise the issue with Prime Minister David Cameron.

However, if the policy becomes law, citizens from other Commonwealth countries might also be eligible to entry to come to the UK to work.
