The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has successfully prosecuted a plumber who left a boiler in a dangerous state at a customer’s home.
Self-employed Michael Dunn of Luscombe Crescent in Paignton, Devon, installed a new gas boiler at a customer’s home at Hillyfield Road in Exeter – and left it leaking gas.
HSE investigators found that the boiler flue which he had installed was not installed to the manufacturer’s instructions and not to the proper standards.
Mr Dunn also ignored repeated concerns raised with him by the homeowners that they could smell gas.
Wales and West Utilities were then called to attend the site and found that there was a gas leak.
The Health and Safety Executive investigated the incident and decided to prosecute Dunn.
On 4 November at Exeter Magistrates’ Court, Michael Dunn pleaded guilty to two breaches of gas safety regulations.
He was fined a total of £1,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs.
