Fire fighters in Milton Keynes have visited tenants with mental health conditions at a supported housing scheme to help make them more aware of fire hazards.
Online publisher MKweb.co.uk,/i> reports that staff at Sanctuary Supported Living's (SSL) Norman Russell House – a scheme for people with mental health needs – invited Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service to the supported housing to offer safety tips to tenants and give advice on minimising the risk of starting fires.
Fire crews also visited individual rooms of tenants to speak about specific fire prevention techniques and safe evacuation procedures.
SSL’s local service manager Ales Chaloupka said:
“We have a good working relationship with Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue – and we were delighted they agreed to come and visit our tenants.
“Mental health needs can occasionally prevent people from fully appreciating the risks posed by fire – and we wanted to be sure we addressed this in a fun and engaging way for tenants.
“This visit has been crucial in providing education on this vital topic.”
Tenants were able to inspect two fire tenders after the talks – including an extendable escape ladder used for rescuing people trapped in multi-storey buildings.
