Escaped prisoner jailed again for series of armed robberies (6 December 2013)

An escaped prisoner from Brighton has been handed a 10-year jail term after he held up four shops in the city at knife point in the space of just seven days earlier this year.
Darren Mills, 34, went on an armed robbing spree after walking out of Ford Open Prison in the spring where he had been serving an indeterminate sentence for a previous crime committed over eight years ago. Mills stole cash from three separate stores before finally being chased off by a member of staff at a Co-op store on Saturday 11, May.
Sussex Police eventually arrested him after searching the local area and he was subsequently charged with four counts of carrying an offensive weapon, three counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery. He was also charged with escaping from custody.
Mills was convicted on Wednesday at Lewes Crown Court where he was found guilty of all the charges against him. He will now serve 10 years in jail. Detective Constable Graham Lewendon commented, “Mills is a dangerous man who is capable of being very violent.”
“He was bold and seemingly unaffected while he carried out a campaign of robberies across Brighton that caused the local community a great amount of fear,” Detective Constable Graham Lewendon said. “Having him off the streets means Brighton and Hove is a safer place to live and work.”
