Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Employment Minister visits Newham school, after council is chosen to roll out free child care extension

Newham Council in east London is one of eight councils across England which will receive a share of £13 million, to pilot the government’s extension of free childcare for three- and four-year-olds later in 2016.

Newham was chosen for the funding after the government called for councils to submit proposals – Wigan, Staffordshire, Swindon, Portsmouth, York Northumberland and Hertfordshire have also been chosen to take forward the government’s plans to extend free childcare.

The local authorities chosen will implement plans to double free childcare to 30 hours from September – a year before the entitlement is rolled out across the country.

All three- and four-year-olds are already entitled to 15 hours of free childcare – but the additional free hours of childcare are intended to make it easier for parents to work.

The funding will be available to families where both parents or one parent is working, provided they earn at least the equivalent of 16 hours a week at national minimum wage levels and up to £100,000 a year.

The experience of the eight authorities chosen to roll out the scheme early will then be used to develop the national rollout of the scheme.

Minister of State for Employment, Priti Patel MP and Councillor Canon Rev Ann Easter visited Edith Kerrison Nursery School in Newham, to see one of the sites in the borough where the extended free childcare offer will be rolled out.

Employment Minister Priti Patel, said:

“I was delighted to visit Edith Kerrison Nursery School and hear how hardworking parents in Newham will benefit from 30 hours of free childcare, which will be delivered in the area a year ahead of the national rollout.”

Councillor Ann Easter added:

“It is great that the government has recognised the hard work of our nurseries and children’s centres in supporting the borough’s families.

“This extra funding will enable us to support even more parents.”

Deputy head of Edith Kerrison Nursery and Children’s Centre, Jo Aylett, added:

“We were delighted to host the visit by the minister and she was able to see how our school is giving the borough’s children the best start in life, as well as supporting parents to make the most of the opportunities in the borough.”
