Transport for London has launched the UK’s first road junction designed to protect cyclists from being hit by vehicles turning left at a junction.
The Evening Standard reports that changes to the London Mayor’s Cycle Superhighway 2 on Whitechapel Road in east London at the junction with Cambridge Heath Road involves traffic lights holding back traffic waiting to make a left turn, while cyclists and other traffic travelling straight ahead are allowed to go first.
Cyclists are held at a red light when other traffic gets the green light to turn left. There is also a two-stage right-turn for cyclists.
The junction has been the scene of several fatal cycle accidents – but all major junctions along the Mayor’s Superhighway are to feature early release junctions for cyclists by 2016.
The safer junction will also be introduced on other London roads.
London Mayor Boris Johnson said at the launch on Tuesday (25/08/15):
“I made a firm commitment that we would upgrade Cycle Superhighway 2, to ensure cyclists get the time and the space they need to cycle safely.
“The innovations we’re using at Cambridge Heath are a fantastic taster of the raft of improvements that are coming down the track – ensuring that people can cycle safely and more confidently in our city.”
