Ministers have begun to draw up new proposals to ensure that divorced parents are granted the right to see their children. Parents who fail to accept the orders will risk penalties and could even face jail terms. Tim Loughton, the children’s minister, has told of how the Government’s vision is to allow children to be free to maintain a relationship with both of their parents, regardless of the relationship that their parents have with each other.

Mr. Loughton believes that the Government must do all that it can to improve the current system to enable children to benefit from maintaining relationships with both of their parents. He added that the proposals would reflect the “valuable and distinct” role that both parents play in bringing up children. Mr. Loughton has told of how the Government was “looking closely” at a range of options for endorsing shared parenting both through legislative and non-legislative means. Nadine O’Connor, the campaign director at Fathers4Justice, has described the Government’s proposals as a huge step forward.
