Ian Paterson, the disgraced breast surgeon who was found to have carried out a number of unnecessary cancer operations, has now been struck off after a tribunal ruled that his actions over a 14-year period were “serious, calculated, and sustained.”

Several of Paterson’s patients have recently spoken out about the physical and emotional suffering that they were subject to at the hands of Paterson, who exaggerated and fabricated the risk of cancer in his patients, subsequently performing unwarranted and inadequate biopsies and mastectomies. In May, Paterson was sentenced to 15 years in jail for 17 counts of wounding with intent, and three counts of unlawful wounding.

Earlier this month, Paterson’s prison sentence was referred to the Court of Appeal under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme, under which anyone can ask for a Crown Court sentence to be reviewed if considered too low.

Now the General Medical Council (GMC) has decided that Paterson’s fitness to practice is impaired by his convictions. Charlie Massey, chief executive of the General Medical Council, commented: “I am pleased that Ian Paterson has today been removed from the medical register and can no longer do harm to patients.”
