The intelligence-led operation – named Operation Chiefton – involved dawn raids on the homes of seven men in connection with child sex exploitation offences.
Operation Chiefton lasted a week and police say the men arrested come from Barrow, Brampton, Carlisle, Millom, Whitehaven, Workington and Wigton. They are aged from 22 to 59.
In a statement on Cumbria Police website, DCI Nick Coughlan from the Public Protection Unit for Cumbria Constabulary, said:
“I am pleased with the success of Operation Chiefton – and it demonstrates our dedication to bringing those who exploit innocent children to justice.”
Cumbria Police have this week launched a campaign aimed at educating children, parents and local communities about how to protect children from sexual exploitation.
DCI Coughlan added:
“Child sexual exploitation is an issue in Cumbria, but thankfully rare – however, it is something we are committed to tackling at every opportunity.
“With Christmas around the corner, it is vitally important that people know the potential dangers of the Internet and social networking.
“We investigate any reports of sexual abuse sensitively and professionally – anyone with any concerns should call Cumbria Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
Operation Chiefton coincided with the Police and Crime Commissioner’s conference last Friday (06/12/13). Police and Crime Commissioner Richard Rhodes said:
“I welcome the police operational activity tackling child sexual exploitation in the county… It is important that all agencies work together to tackle this type of crime.”
The conference also discussed issues of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
