
Croydon Council has prosecuted a further ten people for fly tipping, under the council’s ongoing Don’t Mess With Croydon –Take Pride campaign.
The offences in the latest round of prosecutions ranged from fly tipping local businesses’ waste, to dumping household rubbish and littering cigarettes.
The council has now successfully prosecuted 90 people since launching the Don’t Mess campaign, which combines enforcement with encouraging more than 280 local people to lead community litter picks.
The latest prosecution included Saima Jan of London Road in Norbury, who was ordered to pay a total of £450 for fly tipping black sacks and cardboard boxes of household waste and business rubbish onto the pavement on 16 November 2015.
Michael Laciofano of Ten Tonne Tattoo in Godstone Road in Purley was ordered to pay a total of £450 for fly tipping black sacks of business waste on the pavement on 30 October – and Raja Pervaiz Akthar, 58, of High Street in Thornton Heath was ordered to pay a total of £150 for fly tipping black sacks of waste in Bensham Manor Road on 22 October from the Brigstock Road branch of PFC.
Jemma King of Wentworth Road in Broad Green was ordered to pay a total of £300 for fly tipping black sacks of household waste on the pavement on 10 November – and Jordanna Emmanuel-Brown of Wentworth Road in Broad Green was ordered to pay a total of £150 for fly tipping black sacks of household waste and loose rubbish on the pavement on 10 November.
Other prosecutions included Michaela Allen of London Road in Croydon, who was ordered to pay a total of £100 for fly tipping black sacks, cardboard and other household rubbish on the pavement on 20 November – while Denisa Mechurova of Canterbury Road in Broad Green was ordered to pay a total of £150 for dropping a cigarette in Central Parade, New Addington on 10 November.
Joseph Walsh, 57, of Neville Walk in Carshalton was ordered to pay a total of £150 for dropping a cigarette in North End on 14 November – and Richard Fairbairn of Cricklade Avenue in Streatham, southwest London was ordered to pay £100 for dropping a cigarette in Croydon High Street on 2 December.
Ellie Reynolds, of Newstead Rise in Caterham, was ordered to pay £100 for dropping a cigarette in Purley High Street on 12 November.
As part of the campaign launched in summer 2014, the council has also carried out more than 1,320 business licence inspections – and encouraged more than 240 businesses to sign a pledge to keep their street tidier.
There have also been 80 dual rubbish and recycling bins Installed along streets in the north of the borough – and rules on private business waste collection in Thornton Heath have been tightened.
Deputy leader of Clean Green Croydon, Councillor Stuart Collins, said:
“It’s everyone’s responsibility to do their bit in making our borough cleaner, so I hope these prosecutions lead to more people doing the right thing by not dumping waste illegally.”
