Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Council prosecutes after kitchen store sells 8cm knife to underage customer

Islington Council has prosecuted a company, after a retailer sold a knife to an underage customer.

Paradise Pound Plus Ltd – based at 189 Holloway Road, London N7 – sold the knife on 16 June 2015, when an underage volunteer working with the council’s Trading Standards team was able to purchase a Cook & Eat brand paring knife with an 8cm blade at the shop.

The knife was also displayed openly in the shop, despite council and police advice to retailers to lock away knives or to keep them safely behind the counter.

Because of the seriousness of the offence, Islington Council decided to prosecute the store and Paradise Pound Plus Ltd was fined £150 at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court.

The company was also required to pay a victim surcharge of £25 and council costs of £235.

The council says that the knife was the same brand and type as two knives sold by City Supermarket of 190 Goswell Road in London EC1 to a 17-year-old in June 2014 – minutes after this sale, the knives were used in an attack that left a man with life-threatening wounds.

Islington Council’s executive member for community safety, Councillor Paul Convery, said:

“It’s completely unacceptable that a small number of shops still sell knives without proper checks – despite repeated advice from the council and police.”
