The Conservatives are reportedly considering making benefits inaccessible to migrants who cannot speak English. It is also reported that printing welfare benefits leaflets in foreign languages may also be scrapped.

Translation services in benefits offices may also be abolished – currently the DWP employs linguists to help jobseekers from overseas complete their applications for benefits they may be entitled to. The government currently spends £5 million annually on language services for benefits claimants.

However, migrants unable to claim benefits because they do not speak English may be able to take action against the government if they can prove eligibility for welfare benefits in the UK.

Australian election strategist Lynton Crosby has been appointed as chief election adviser to the Tories in the run up to the general election in May 2015.

Mr Crosby is known for his right wing views and the Conservatives’ election campaign may focus on delivering a weekly message on controversial issues like immigration to claw back voters deserting the three main political parties for UKIP.

The Daily Mail has reported that the Liberal Democrats have already opposed Tory plans to make the benefits service solely English speaking.

However, backbench Conservative MP Dr Liam Fox said:

“The principle is a good one but it needs to be introduced in a way that’s fair and reasonable. If it is, it will meet with general public approval.

“The ability to speak English is one of the most empowering tools in the labour market and we should be encouraging as many people as possible to learn it.”
