A spokesman for the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board has said that nearly 500 people have booked appointments for skin tests, after clients at tattoo parlours in Newport, South Wales, developed infections.
The South Wales Argus reports that infections have been linked to clients of a business that traded under the names of Blue Voodoo, Sun Tattoo Studio, and Flesh Wound, at premises in Commercial Street in Newport between May 2013 and January 2015.
Customers are now coming forward to book health checks after receiving a letter from the health board and will be tested at dedicated clinics by specialist nurses for infections which include the liver diseases, Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C – as well as HIV.
The alert was caused by five cases of infections linked to the tattoo parlours.
A total of 550 customers have been contacted.
Public health experts have stressed that the risk of infection is “very small”, however.
Newport Council's environmental health team is currently investigating the business, which closed in March.
