The only dedicated cervical cancer charity in the UK has launched a campaign using social media to highlight a rise in the number of cases of cervical cancer among young women.

The #SmearForSmear online campaign launched by the charity Jo's Cervical Cancer Trust will highlight the importance of women attending their smear test appointments. Women are being asked to use lipstick to smear their cheek and upload a selfie using the hashtag #SmearForSmear.

Having a smear test can help diagnose early-stage changes in the cervix and enable women to receive treatment for pre-cancerous cells before the disease develops.

Figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that cases of cervical cancer among women under 35 have risen by 4% in the last year – and have increased by one-third (33%) in ten years.

Cervical cancer is only found in sexually active women – however, one in three younger women fail to attend smear test appointments, with one-fifth of young women saying they think the test is “unnecessary”.

Late diagnosis of changes in the cells of the cervix can mean more extensive treatment to remove the cells – and may also mean cervical cancer being diagnosed at a later stage.

Changes to the cells in the cervix (neck of the womb) are usually caused by the sexually transmitted Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) virus, which causes genital warts and is transmitted during unprotected sex.
