A care home inspected by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has been branded inadequate in its safety and leadership, after inspectors found residents were not bathed for weeks and were left in soiled sheets, with dirty chairs to sit in.

The Halstead Gazette reports that Attwoods Manor in Braintree Road, Halstead, Essex left residents at risk of infection, according to the CQC report, which labelled the nursing home “inadequate” overall.

At an inspection of the care home in January, CQC inspectors found that there were poor standards of hygiene throughout the home and one resident had not had a bath for two weeks.

CQC inspectors had previously carried out a routine inspection of Attwoods Manor in July 2014 and had also visited in May 2014.

After these inspections, staff were ordered to improve unsafe medicine management immediately, as well as improving care of the elderly residents.

The CQC report published in 2014 concludes:

“People were not always cared for by staff who were supported to deliver care and treatment safely and to an appropriate standard.”

The report also states that staff told CQC inspectors that the training they had received was sufficient to help them to meet people's needs – however, inspectors found that some staff had not completed all the training available to them.

The CQC is due to publish another report on Attwoods Manor once its checks are complete.
