CBI says immigration is a key priority for UK businesses (11 November 2014)

In a speech to the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) conference in London, the Prime Minister has said that the UK will not remain in the EU “come what may”.
Mr Cameron is currently trying to renegotiate the UK’s membership of the EU to try and limit immigration from some EU countries – and especially among unskilled workers or those who come to Britain without a job.
Mr Cameron told the CBI that proper controls on immigration are needed – and Brussels needs to address the British people’s concerns.
However, business leaders attending the CBI conference have spoke out in favour of immigration in the UK, saying that supporting immigration in the UK is a “key business priority”.
CBI president Sir Michael Rake said that 63% of CBI members claim immigration has been beneficial to their businesses – and only 1% claim it has been negative.
Sir Michael added that around two million Britons are now living “elsewhere in Europe”.
“The economic evidence shows that immigration is of net benefit,” Sir Michael said.
“EU migrants pay taxes, collect less benefit than British citizens – and many do not settle in the UK permanently.
“Immigration has been and is part of the solution to the skills shortages faced by the UK.”
