Wirral Council environmental health officers have served two emergency prohibition notices on a butcher’s shop, after inspectors found serious food safety breaches.

Environmental health officers concluded that Gibson’s Butchers in Allport Lane in Bromborough presented an “imminent risk of injury to health”.

On 22 January, Wirral Magistrates’ Court upheld prohibition notices served by Wirral Council environmental health officers, following an inspection on 12th January.

The premises had initially been inspected by officers on 5 January and notices issued then had not been complied with by the time of the second inspection a week later.

Practices at the premises were said to be poor, leading to a risk of cross contamination and inadequate vacuum packing, which posed an imminent risk to health.

At a hearing on Wednesday 20 January 2016, the court agreed with the findings of the officers and issued two Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Orders. The court also awarded full costs of £1,189.27 to Wirral Council.

Investigations are ongoing and environmental health officers are working closely with the business to ensure that standards are improved and the health of the public is protected.

Wirral Council Cabinet member for Environmental Protection, Councillor Bernie Mooney, said:

“While the main role of our officers is to provide guidance and advice to support food businesses in Wirral, there are times such as this when enforcement action is necessary in order to protect the health of the public.

“I commend the decisive actions of environmental health staff in this case in highlighting potential dangerous practices before any member of the public was seriously affected.”

Cross contaminations of meat products and vacuum packaging which fails can lead to bacterial infections such as campylobacter or salmonella, if meat and poultry are not properly stored and are not cooked sufficiently or are re-heated.

In serious gastric infections such as salmonella, symptoms may subside only to return weeks later – and without medical intervention, long-term bouts of gastrointestinal illness may result in chronic conditions such as post-infective irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or Crohn’s disease.

In vulnerable or elderly patients and children, untreated food poisoning infections may lead to serious dehydration requiring hospital treatment.
