Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Butcher prosecuted after teenage apprentice loses hand

A 16-year-old apprentice who lost a hand when it became trapped in machinery at a butcher’s where he worked has returned to work at the same shop with a prosthetic limb.

P&K Meats of Surrey have been fined for a breach of health and safety relating to a mincing machine at the premises.

Paramedics were forced to amputate Thomas Stevens’ right hand after it became trapped in the machinery.

Thomas – from Westhay in Somerset – had been working at the butcher’s shop as a trainee for just six weeks when the incident happened.

A court heard that the mincing machine had not been fitted with a guard – and butcher Paul Jeffrey had not trained his staff sufficiently. Mr Jeffrey was fined £15,000 plus costs.

Mr Jeffrey’s insurers are currently dealing with a compensation claim relating to Thomas’ injuries.

Mr Jeffrey’s lawyer said after the court hearing:

“He has tried his best to make it up to Tom by training him and passing on what he knows – and the most important thing is that he has learnt from this.”

Once Thomas is trained, he will be taken on as a qualified butcher by the shop.
