Brent Council says that it is now the top borough in northwest London – and is second in London as a whole – for safeguarding victims of domestic violence.
The council says that its Community Protection Team has been advocating the increased use of Domestic Violence Protection Notices (DVPNs) – and Brent has now successfully converted a total of 22 DVPNs into Domestic Violence Protection Orders (DVPOs).
DVPNs give power to the police to safeguard a victim and their family if the victim is reluctant to pursue a prosecution – often due to fear of any potential repercussions from an abusive partner.
However, a suspected domestic violence offender who is neither charged nor otherwise on bail at the time of release from police custody may be free to return to the scene of the abuse –sometimes within hours of arrest. A DVPN prevents this from happening.
Brent Council's Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities, Councillor Michael Pavey, said:
“Domestic violence is utterly unacceptable – no woman, child or man should ever be a victim of this kind of abuse.
“I'm delighted to see the great work of the Council's Community Protection Team – as well as the police – paying off.
“We will continue to work extremely hard to tackle the perpetrators of domestic violence and to safeguard its victims.”
