A man has died in a shooting incident in the heart of London’s theatre land, Shaftesbury Avenue.

The shooting happened on Boxing Day (26/12/13) inside the Avalon Club, situated next to the Palace Theatre where the music Les Misérables is currently showing.

The Avalon describes itself as a “cocktail lounge” and has live DJs playing music at night. Its publicity material says the club “oozes” creativity and class.

The unnamed man was attending a private function at the Avalon when he was shot. The 31-year-old victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died despite being taken to hospital soon after the shooting. It is thought police know the dead man’s identity and his next of kin have been informed.

Onlookers report seeing revellers fleeing from the club after the shooting, which took place at around 3am.

Shaftesbury Avenue was closed in the early hours of Boxing Day while police investigated the shooting – a bloodstained shirt was found on the street.

This is the second time in as many weeks Shaftesbury Avenue has been closed off because of a major incident. The club is situated near Soho Fire Station, from where fire tenders attended the Apollo Theatre roof collapse in the week leading up to the Christmas holiday.

Shaftesbury Avenue is one of the most popular tourist areas in central London, and is known for its West End theatres and proximity to London’s China Town and Soho.

A man has been arrested in connection with the shooting and is being questioned by police.
